My name is Allan. I am a dad, a spouse, and a first responder like you.
I come from a family of four, I’m the youngest of two, and my father was also a firefighter.
Following in my father’s footsteps, I entered into the service at the early age of 18. I continued through the ranks for 24 years eventually becoming an acting captain before retiring and pursuing Third Alarm Coaching.
But it was not a smooth path…
Not even close!
Ten years into my amazing career as a Firefighter/Paramedic it seemed like just another day.
I was doing what every first responder does and was responding to a call. This particular call was from a very sick man caught in a tight washroom.
I had no idea my life was about to change forever.
While moving this unstable man from the tiny washroom, he coded and went lifeless as we were moving him through the doorway.
My first reaction was to grab him as he collapsed and when I did, I sustained an injury that shifted the entire course of my life forever.
I remember hearing the fatal “crack” followed by my knees buckling underneath me.
Pain shot from my neck to my heels and dropped me right where I stood.
I laid on the ground writhing in agony wondering what just happened and how I would ever move past this.
I had severely injured my spine.
My L3, L4, and L5 were toast – it seemed like my life as I knew it was over.
I had multiple herniations and lost almost all ability to function like a normal human.
Just putting on my socks, taking a walk, or climbing stairs was a nightmare.
Not to mention trying to do the daily tasks required of the job.
Life became unbearable for me.
The only thing that helped me to cope was eating food and drinking booze.
So I ate and I drank a lot.
Emotional eating gripped me and drained any remaining joy from my body.
I gained 30, then 40, then 50, and eventually 60 pounds of fat, and my body was a sedentary mess.
As time went on my demons grew in number. It seemed like every day a new demon was knocking on my door.
Depression
Anxiety
Weight gain
PTSD
Insomnia
Pain
Loneliness
Despair
They were all an intimate player in my daily struggles.
To make matters worse my wife of 16 years told me that she had fallen out of love with me and no longer wanted to be my wife.
I was destroyed…
Divorced, broken, and utterly hopeless I had nothing left to live for.
I remember the day…
I was laying on the sofa, contemplating ending it all.
I had fallen so far. So far that regaining my life seemed impossible.
Then I remembered what my father used to say to me.
“Never give up son, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”
What if I could turn this tide?
What if I could right this sinking ship?
Day by day and step by step I pulled myself from the wreckage I had fallen into.
I created systems that helped me navigate the day
I learned to eat for energy and optimal health and cured my depression.
I learned how to reclaim my life
I literally bio-hacked my way back to amazing health and wellness and in the process realized this was now my calling.
This is my why.
This is why I get up every day.
This is my legacy to the world.
